Description

Educating for diversity means more than simply ensuring that everyone has access to school. It means ensuring that every student has a teacher who is prepared to recognize their potential, understand their needs, and develop educational responses that foster learning and development. In Special Education, this responsibility makes teacher preparation an essential condition for turning the right to education into a reality. This book addresses one of the fundamental challenges facing education in Angola: the professional development of teachers working in Special Education, with a particular focus on Namibe Province. Through an analysis of teacher education and an assessment of educational realities, the study identifies needs related to specialized knowledge, pedagogical skills, motivation, and professional commitment, alongside existing strengths that can drive the transformation of educational practice. These findings led to the development of a professional development strategy that integrates workshops and on-the-job training as fundamental organizational approaches, structured around the stages of diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation. The proposed strategy seeks to connect professional preparation with the concrete situations teachers encounter in their daily practice. The strategy was submitted for evaluation by 25 specialists, who rated it as Very Appropriate and provided recommendations that contributed to its refinement, enhanced its quality, and strengthened its potential for implementation in the educational context for which it was designed. Beyond diagnosing an existing reality, this book proposes pathways for transforming it. Training teachers means expanding students’ opportunities for learning, participation, and development while contributing, through educational practice, to the strengthening of Special Education in Angola.
